The Champions League has finally arrived, and as per usual, it hasn’t disappointed thus far! Through 2 complete rounds of play in the group stages, we’ve seen quite a few massive clubs find themselves on the wrong end of the score. With the likes of Manchester City losing to Olympique Lyonnais (Lyon), Real Madrid losing to CSKA Moscow, Bayern Munich being held to a draw against Ajax, and Paris Saint Germain (PSG) losing a thriller to Liverpool (not that surprising to some of us!). We saw the likes of Manchester United barely hold onto a draw against Valencia, Tottenham have lost both of their games to Barcelona and Inter Milan which will make moving onto the Knockout phase extremely difficult, but not impossible considering their main man Harry Kane hasn’t been firing on all cylinders quite yet. Week 2 of the Champions League also gave us a moment the young American, Weston McKennie, will never forget as he scored his first goal and the late winner for Bundesliga side Schalke against a tough Russian side in Lokomotiv Moscow. It was an extremely proud and incredible moment to watch, one that I’m sure he has watched over and over again!
The 2018 Ballon d’Or 30-man shortlist came out this week and it is quite an impressive list at that! The Ballon d’Or is an annual football award presented by France Football and has been awarded every year since 1956 with the winner being voted for by journalists from around the world, with one representative per nation. The Ballon d’Or has been won by both Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi a total of 5 times each for the past decade. The last player to win the Ballon d’Or that isn’t named Ronaldo or Messi was Brazilian superstar, Kaka, way back in 2007. This year’s list of potential winners is jam-packed with some of the biggest names in the game. The usual candidates Ronaldo and Messi top the list, as well as players such as Mohammed Salah (Liverpool), Eden Hazard (Chelsea), Sergio Aguero (Manchester City), Paul Pogba (Manchester United), Antoine Griezmann (Atletico Madrid), Neymar (PSG), Kylian Mbappe (PSG), Harry Kane (Tottenham) and N’Golo Kante (Chelsea) just to name a few!
We know who our vote would be for! What about you?
